Sports Injury
The Sports Injury Office
I'll be honest, I am not a professional sports therapist or massage therapist, so what I know about treating fitness related strains, pains and bruising has been learned from my own stupid mistakes the majority brought on when I was a beginner to weightlifting. I have suffered my fair share, mostly due to the fact that I didn't properly stretch out before and after a particularly intense workout session.
For example, I can tell you about the worst strain I ever experienced. It was a result of some pretty intense stiff-legged deadlifts. It was the first time I'd performed these, and if you've ever done stiff-legged deadlifts then you know that you usually don't feel the burn until the day after. Well, 2 days after my workout I was in total agony. My hamstrings were so tight that I was left performing stiff-legged walking, stiff-legged stair climbing, and stiff-legged hobbling to my office after a 1-hour commute to work.
If only I had the advice of an expert like Ian Brown, I would have known that strains require light stretching (without feeling pain), followed with the application of an ice pack to the injured area. I would have also known that instead of trying to go back to the gym and tough it out that I required rest for at least 2 to 3 days.
I have to thank my good friend Ian Palmer, editor of a publication called Sports Express, who was good enough to allow me to share Ian Brown's expertise and articles with you on this site.
