We've already covered that fad diets might help you shed weight temporarily, but as soon as you stop dieting and pick up your old eating habits you'll gain the weight back. Keeping the weight off means abandoning some current lifestyle choices with new ones, because that's really what you need a lifestyle makeover, not a diet.

Here are my tips for transforming your life, your health and your body for the better:

First off, forget about dieting scratch the word diet from your dictionary, your thesaurus, your vocabulary and you life. The key to long-term weight loss and control are first establishing a healthy eating pattern combined with exercise and next sticking to it!

Become your own personal chef Shopping and cooking for yourself is a great way to save money and better yet, to control what goes in your body. Keep all temptation out of your house by banning salty, bad-fatty, sugary, processed, white-flour, greasy delights from your refrigerator and cupboards. Prepare a grocery list full of whole grain, fibrous foods, lean meats version, fresh fruits and veggies to prepare your meals. Stuff your pantry with spices (not salt) to add some flavor. After all, who said that healthy food had to be boring?

Go ahead and snack just do it right Realistically you should be eating 5 to 6 small meals per day. For more information read my article Tips to Kick Start your Metabolism . Every 3 hours snack on a piece of fresh fruit, raw veggies or a container of fat-free yogurt in combination with a healthy protien such as fat-free cottage cheese, a handful of unsalted nuts, hardboiled egg whites or lean fish, beef or chicken.

Get up off that couch If you're sitting around on the couch moping about your fat belly with a beer in one hand and a bag of pork rinds in the other, you're doing yourself more harm than good. Start slow by incorporating 30 minutes of moderate exercise into your life 5 days per week. It can be as easy as walking to the grocery store to get healthier foods.

Keep realistic goals in mind The key to sticking with a diet isn't to make yourself eat just grapefruit. Are you really going to just eat grapefruit for the rest of your life? Instead, take baby steps by cutting pop and sugary juices out of your diet this week and next week move onto cutting out bad fats.

We're not in the business of punishment If you slip, the worst thing you can do is throw your hands in the air and give up. We all make mistakes I know that I do. So, note your bad choice and move on by committing to extra healthy eating for the next week. Also, an extra 15 minutes of exercise couldn't hurt either.
