Online Shopping: Convenience or Laziness?

Have you ever heard of ‘Cyber Monday’?

For those who haven’t, I’m referring to the first Monday following Thanksgiving. This day is the busiest day of the season for online Christmas shopping sales.

Bagging gifts online has been a growing trend, according to a research poll conducted by Hitwise. It seems that online Christmas shopping for the 2006 holiday season is already up 81 per cent from last year. In fact, just to give you an idea of just how packed the world wide mall gets, ComScore Network reported that 92 percent of all Christmas shoppers said they plan to shop online this year. That number is up 11.1 million from 2004! It’s quite significant, especially considering that growth is expected to continue to soar higher than Santa’s reindeer.

Now I can understand the convenience of online shopping - especially for those of us who get claustrophobic in crowded stores. However, how many online shoppers are just plain lazy?

Is it just me, or is online shopping just another excuse to stay hunched over your computer rather then getting off your butt and physically walking into a store to buy your presents!

With childhood obesity on the rise, what kind of role models are we as parents when we no longer take the kids out Christmas shopping? Especially when we’re shopping for gifts like the Sony PlayStation 3 (PS3), the hottest gift on Santa lists this year. How many kids will actually get off the couch until spring thaw?

One respondent to the Hitwise poll joked that, “My son thinks that the UPS man is Santa”. Well honey, regardless of a brown suit or a red suit, a man that stays at home eating cookies in front of his computer instead of climbing chimneys will undoubtedly pack on the extra Christmas pounds!

That sounds like reach, PS3 gaming to obesity. What about all those tasty treats and pop in between games? They contribute way more to obseity in kids than the tech based consumer goods.

This just sounds like another attack on free enterprise.

I don't know what to think. That GizmoCafe article seems to think you're bashing techie geeks. I didn't think it was that bad but hey what do I kno? If FitnessGear really thinks PS3 is to blame for child obesity, heck we should outlaw it or something, shouldn't we?

I'm not sure there's much appeal in taking your kids to the mall shopping - or much exercise for that matter.  Maybe for the first ten minutes, then it's a lot of feet dragging, "Mommy let's go home"-ing.  No fun for a kid, a parent or the other people at the mall.

Maybe a better use would be to spend the time you save by online shopping to take your kid out for a walk to the park or for a game of basketball or something - anything besides more PS3 time! ; )  Much more fun for everyone, and much more exercise!

Well I guess my post yesterday didn’t make me any friends in the gadget realm. It seems that Gizmo Guy of GizmoCafé.com, an very informative website that teaches the average consumer how to get the most from their technology, thinks that I took a swipe at gadget heads with my comments about online shopping, the new PS3…and he thinks that I questioned the magic flying prowess of Santa’s reindeer.

I gotta say Gizmo Guy, as someone who provides techie advice in plain English – you sure know how to put a bunch of mixed up jargon in other people’s mouths. Wow! Now excuse me for just a second, while I spit out the mound of BS you just fed me so I can set the record straight!

First off, I never blamed the PS3 for the rise in child obesity! If anything I put the onus on parents who should be role models for their kids and the healthy vs. unhealthy behaviors they learn.  And before you warp this comment and stuff it back in my mouth, let me say that I don’t think online shopping, video games or video game systems are solely responsible for the obesity of our youth. The trouble is when kids have a total lack of active recreation in their lives. Oh but wait, is this just another one of your attempts to accuse someone of “subverting the youth of America” a la a certain pink Sony NW-E00 MP3 player that you deemed “gay”! What’s wrong with you? Did the pink walkman…oh I mean “walk-lady”, as you call it, make you feel all tingly inside or something?

I got news for you Gizmo Guy; I think a lot of people would find offense in how liberal you are with your “gay” labels. Shame on you Gizmo Guy for being so archaic that you can’t possibly bring yourself to share an electronic device with a woman! But maybe I should have expected it from a blog that has to post a warning introduction to their videos:  “It’s not the intention of the GizmoCafe blog to be offensive. But we don’t care about political correctness so much.” – sound familiar!

Let me say that I have absolutely no problem whatsoever with pink walk-mans or Lance Bass’ sexual orientation for that matter. I also have no problem with online shoppers, gamers or anyone who works “hunched over a computer”. Take me for instance, I work at a cubicle for 8-plus hours a day, and I’ve even spent the odd Friday playing Waterdeep with friends. But I do still find the time to take care of my body and to do something active. You’ve got to admit; even if it’s just walking around the mall…at least it’s walking! But that doesn’t mean I confuse what people say in reality with my role-playing games. Maybe the women in yours are submissive to your scabbard-welding-Mage-self, but in the real world, in the FitnessGear101 world, we accept people for their unique qualities, women and men are free to bring their pink MP3 players to the gym, and to pick a spotting buddy of any gender they wish - without fear of being labeled “gay” by someone as narrow as you!

BTW – Thanks for the introduction to Nintendo’s Wii, it sounds like an innovative device.  It goes to show that people from different worlds can get along – they just need to have open minds!

Thank you Anna. I am flattered you suggest women are submissive to my "scabbard-welding-Mage-self". :) That's a compliment coming from a scrappy one such as yourself ... meeeoww!

If I lived in an RPG I'd definitely fancy myself a sort of melee / mage character. No master of either but can compete in both the dark arts of technology or the sword wielding arena of communication, even if it might for purposes of intimidation, domination, or delivering the odd brow beating to get something done.

What's this 'real world' thing? I choose not to believe
[rolls 20 sided die vs illusion]

More later - but I totally agree with staying fit, that's why I read your blog! But to me, fitness is a means to enjoying more of my favorite technology - and so that I can always be ready to answer the call when the world needs a crime frighting vigilante, but that's another story ;)

Long lines, higher prices, fighting for parking spaces, over-heated malls and constant Christmas tunes that have been playing since before Halloween....Think I'll stick to ordering online, saves gas and frustration. Then I have time to go out for a walk...outside...without worrying about catching a cold from the last person who pushed my cart.

Scrappy! Touché my melee / mage friend.

I definitely agree with your point that technology and fitness can go hand in hand. For instance, I'm extremely psyched that the Nintendo Wii is tops on many Christmas lists this year. I can see it now...all the festive little gamers in their Super Mario pjs, unwrapping their Nintendo Wiis this December 25th, and then spending the afternoon playing tennis or running a marathon a la the commercial. It really does blend technology and fitness nicely - and it may even have you mastering the dark arts yet Wayde...help us all :)
