I went for a 35 minute run last night after work. I do that on days in between my new plyometric workout that I was telling you about on Tuesday. As I jogged around my neighborhood and then did laps around the track at the local high school one thing became very apparent – IT’S DANG COLD OUT THERE!
Now if you’ve ever walked or ran outside in the winter (if you’re from a local where the temperature dips below freezing come mid-November), then you know how it can send you running back into the house to your flannel pjs. Well I’ve learned a few tricks in order to make sure I get my daily run in. For instance, I have to make sure that I’m as warm and comfortable as possible, or I’d be taking refuge in my bed most mornings like everyone else.
That’s why I’ve learned to prepare myself using the following winter running/walking tips.
Wear layers - In order to ensure that I’m not too hot and not too cold I dress in layers. That way my body is able to adjust to the temperature. And as I work up a sweat, or start to overheat, I can shed a layer to be comfortable. Tip: Make sure to wear breathable fabrics. For example start with a thin cotton or Thinselet layer underneath. New wicking fabrics are excellent options because they keep sweat off of your skin, and dry very quickly.
Shoes with good tread – If you’re walking choose a sturdy runner or hiking boot with good tread. If you run, you likely don’t want a clunky hiking boot, but you can also invest in a pair of rubber cleats for your runners (they start at about $40). These slip over the soles of your running shoes, and offer extra traction on slippery pavement, ice and snow.
Pre-skin care – If you spend a lot of time outdoors in the frigid clime you know how it can take a toll on your skin. Before you leave the house apply a skin cream with SPF 30, a lip balm and remember your sunglasses. They will keep the glare coming off the snow and ice from impairing your vision. When the temperature dips well below zero, I’m not passed wearing a ski mask, ear muffs and 2 pairs of gloves to protect my skin.
